The near-final tally of votes for the May 2019 poll seems to guarantee actor and politician Lito Lapid a sure seat in the Senate.
Inspite of that, the actor’s victory is meeting some questions regarding his competence as his highest educational attainment is ‘high school graduate.’
“12 years din ako naging Senador . ‘Yan pa rin ang issue sa akin, hindi raw marunong,” Lapid said, as per The Filipino Times. [I’ve been a Senator for 12 years. That is still the issue, they say I know notthing.]
He laments on how celebrities were just being used to promote causes and boost careers of others but receive a different treatment once elected.
“Pagdating ng eleksyon puro artista ginagamit. Kapag may artistang naupo, binabatikos pa. Eh, syempre kami naman eh nasasaktan naman kami dahil ba sa hindi kami nakapag-aral ng college kamukha ko.”
[During election, celebrities are being used. If a celebrity runs, he receives criticisms. Of course, we feel pain. Is it because we didn’t reach college, as in my case?]
He said he is planning to support the legislative agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte and will be a part of the Senate’s majority.
Lapid credits his winning to the support of the Duterte administration and his appearance on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano as Romulo “Leon” Dumaguit.
He added that when he goes around in the market, people shouts “Cardo”, the cop role played by Coco Martin in the action series, based on Philippine Star.
According to ABS-CBN News, Lapid is being backed by the Nationalist People’s Coalition and has been a senator for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2016.
Lapid has been the Senate Committee on Tourism and Cooperatives Chairman.
